In the late morning we will drive from Orvieto to Pienza via the scenic Montepulciano route. Along the way we will stop at the unique 16th century centrally-planned Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Biagio, Montepulciano.
After lunch together, a local guide will lead us on a walk around Pienza, a papal urban planning commission. We will be introduced to the work of Bernardo Rossellino, architect of the town’s main square, cathedral and palaces.
Our accommodation for the next three nights is a small, family-run hotel with a restful garden and swimming pool in the Tuscan countryside. At sunset we will meet for a special group dinner in the hotel’s outdoor restaurant from where views extend across the hills to Siena a short distance away.
Total drive time today: 2 hours 30 minutes.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
