Day 8, Mon 23 September

Our tour today begins in Siena’s Piazza del Campo, regarded as one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and famous for il Palio, the wild biannual horse race. Here we will view the sculpted fountain, Fonte Gaia, before briefly moving on to the Loggia della Mercanzia and then marvel at the 14th century frescoes in the Museo Civico.

After time to purchase your own lunch, we will rendezvous outside Siena’s majestic cathedral. Within this treasure-trove of sacred art, we will note the richly decorated façade, the marble pulpit, the mosaic pavement narratives, the extraordinary Piccolomini Library with its scenes from the life of a Renaissance pope, the breathtaking ‘Gate of Heaven’ high up in the rafters and the Baptistery
with its Renaissance font
