Today you can choose guided art explorations in Florence, free time to do your own thing, or more guided hiking in the surrounding hills. (Hike duration 4-5 hours, distance 15kms).
The art tour begins with a visit to the Bargello, an austere fortress holding a remarkable collection of key Renaissance sculptures including pieces by Donatello, della Robbia, Verrocchio and Michelangelo.
Next stop, the guild church of Orsanmichele, once a grain warehouse with unusual origins and architecture, and guild statues placed in niches on the exterior. (Statue replicas are in situ with the originals inside the museum).
We will then move onto the convent of Ognissanti to study Ghirlandaio’s monumental fresco The Last Supper and his Saint Jerome, as well as a Saint Augustine by Botticelli - all highly detailed for works in fresco.
In the afternoon we will be guided through the vast and magnificent Pitti Palace, one of Florence’s largest architectural monuments and for nearly 200 years the primary residence of the Medici family.
Accommodation: 6th night at Hotel Balestri, Florence.
Meals included: breakfast.
