The day begins with a short stroll to Orvieto’s cathedral, built with alternating bands of local white travertine and blue-grey basalt. Inside we will view the magnificent 15thcentury frescoes in the Chapel of the Madonna di San Brizio, depicting scenes from the Last Judgement and the Apocalypse.
From there we walk 10-15 minutes to visit an interesting feature of Orvieto and a great example of Renaissance engineering, San Patrizio’s Well.
After time to find your own lunch we will travel by private bus to Villa Lante in Bagnaia, built for two cardinals and featuring a classic example of Renaissance formal garden design with lovely fountains.
The drive continues through rolling hill country to Villa Farnese at Caprarola, a little known masterpiece of Renaissance art and architecture built for another (Farnese) cardinal, before returning to Orvieto.
Total drive time today: 2 hours 45.
Accommodation: 2nd night at Hotel Aquila Bianca, Orvieto.
