Our tour today begins in Siena’s Piazza del Campo, regarded as one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares, renowned for its beauty and famous for il Palio, the wild biannual horse race. Here we will see the sculpted fountain, Fonte Gaia, before briefly stopping at the Loggia della Mercanzia on our way to viewing the exceptional 14th century frescoes in the Museo Civico.
After time for lunch (at your own expense) we will rendezvous outside Siena’s majestic cathedral, with its the richly decorated façade. Within this treasure trove of sacred art, we will note the marble pulpit, the mosaic pavement narratives, the extraordinary Piccolomini Library with its scenes from the life of a Renaissance pope, the Baptistery with its Renaissance font and the breathtaking ‘Gate of Heaven’ high up in the rafters.
