Siena’s Santa Maria della Scala was once an important hospital dedicated to caring for abandoned children, the poor, the sick and pilgrims. Now a museum, it is considered one of Siena’s most important artistic hubs. A local guide will lead us on a private tour introducing the artworks and sculptures within the vast complex, including the original sculptures from the Fonte Gaia. Note: the original sculptures from the Cathedral façade are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, along with the Maestà of Duccio.
The afternoon is free. You might take the opportunity to go shopping, or to explore more of Siena and its surrounds, or to rest and relax back at the hotel.
Extra activities available from the hotel include swimming, tennis, golf, bike-riding, walking, horse-riding, spa treatments and more.
A guided hike will also be available along the Via Francigena pilgrims’ trail to Monteriggione Castle (3 hours, 14 kms).
